The Struggle for Democracy and the Working Class!

- Rajesh Tyagi/ 3.10.2026

As corporate bulls- Adani and Ambani- lock horns with each other for influence and control over the political state, we witness a more vocal and rising opposition to the Modi Govt. As this government has promoted Adani group to commanding heights of economy, the sections of corporate have turned hostile to it. They are turning to opposition besides creating-promoting the one like CJP.

Not surprisingly, they hide their maneuver behind the veil of ‘fight for democracy’ to dupe and mobilise the popular masses behind them. They want to pressure the Modi government for a compromise.

What are ignited by this maneuver, are but the genuine aspirations of the working people who are bearing the real brunt of the brutal capitalist rule being overseen by Modi at present.

In the last more than a decade of its rule, Modi government has been exposed as a tool of big Indian and foreign corporate. Working people enmasse have turned against its rule and want to see its fall.

In this popular sentiment, the leaders and parties of the opposition find an opportunity to stage a comeback to power- not to undermine the rule of big capitalists, but merely to substitute themselves for Modi in the pilot seat of the state power. Like Modi, these leaders and parties under them are also tied to the rival gangs of big corporate, both Indian and foreign, who want to depose Adani and Modi respectively from the heights of economic and political pyramids. Behind the calls of defence of democracy, there lie the naked and brutal self-interests of these corporate sharks who want to takeover the economy and monopolise the political power but for themselves. Neither the corporates nor their political agents in the opposition stand for any democracy, liberty or freedom.

Rahul Gandhi, Kejriwal, Akhilesh, Mamta, Tejaswi all are proven stooges of big corporate like Modi and shameless supporters of capitalist rule. The political power in their hands in the past had been no different than that under Modi today. Out of power now they are vouching for democracy and freedom.

Rumours are that apart from the opposition leaders and parties, a faction inside the ruling BJP opposed to Modi and led by its second line leader, Nitin Gadkari, is also aiding and provoking the agitation while Ambani and his lobby of capitalists is financing this agitation.

Working people would get nothing out of the substitution of Modi-Shah combine by Rahul-Tejaswi-Akhilesh-Mamta-Maya combine or that of Adani by Ambani. They must fight to depose Modi Government but not for garb of power by leaders of bourgeois opposition. Besides fighting for exit of Modi, they must consolidate and fight for their own power. They must strive for a Government of Workers and Toilers.

The fake left leaders are directly aiding the bourgeois rightwing opposition in propagation and promotion of illusion that the goal of the struggle is to defend democracy. These thugs are on the payrolls of the big corporate. In 2014, CPIM was the fourth largest party to receive corporate donations.

The calls and appeals for defence of bourgeois democracy or its institutions like Parliament, Election Commission or Supreme Court in 21st century, is an outright bluff on the working people. Neither these institutions nor this democracy or the right to vote has been of any use to the masses of working and toiling people.

Till the end of 19th Century, a struggle for bourgeois democracy still retained relevance for Tsarist Russia, Manchu China or British India, for the simple reason that working class was not sufficiently organised to contend for power independently and in struggle against the bourgeoisie. The slogan for convening the constituent assembly, still had the steam to propel a revolutionary movement against the medieval lords or colonialists’ rule.

By the advent of 20th Century, with emergence of finance capital in the centre of world economy, strengthening of national bourgeoisie and simultaneous consolidation of the working class brought the old era to a close. For independently organised and politically mobilised working class in the backward periphery of the world, the fight for bourgeois democracy, had lost all its shine.

While in the West, now the undisputed task before Communist Parties was to undermine the bourgeois democracies in direct fight for socialism, in the East, the success of the revolution against combine of native lords and colonialists, implied the political hegemony of the working class over it growing into its state dictatorship with victory of the revolution.

The prospect of domination of the national bourgeoisie would only mean the victory of the counter revolution and consequently bloody suppression of the revolution and the working people. The fight for and in defence of bourgeois democracy, lost all steam for working class, everywhere.

Thus, in the far East- Russia, China, India- the win for bourgeois democracy was realised through bloody suppression of the revolution. Crowned by ascendance of Prince Lvov and Kerensky in Russia, Sun Yat Sen and later Chiang Kai Shek’s Kuomintang in China, of Congress under Gandhi-Nehru-Patel-Ambedkar in India and Muslim League under Jinnah in Pakistan, had come on the back of bloody counter revolution, that produced failed states, inherently hostile to any independent movement of their working class.

In 20th century, the question of democracy had thus become integral to the question of socialism.

It were Mensheviks in Russia and Stalinists-Maoists in China, India and Pakistan, the adherents of politically false and historically dejected ‘two stage theory’ of revolution, who looked at the question of democracy in abstraction and in isolation from the fight for socialism. In their quest for democracy under the hated rule of capitalist class, they turned into pitiable drumbeaters for this rule.

In 21st century, i.e. more than hundred years after the dashing victory of working class and socialism in October Revolution, all talk of defence of bourgeois democracy or its institutions, is not only outdated but outright reactionary from the standpoint of working class.

Working class has no stake or interest in defence of bourgeois democracy. It knew well in advance that the democracy and capitalism were always strange bedfellows who could not have lived together for long. Capitalist democracy, the veiled dictatorship of big capitalists, can ensures freedom and liberty only for a handful of big capitalists to loot and exploit the working people, is bound to degenerate into its opposite- fascism or some other sort of open dictatorship of capitalist class. Only thugs can call this rule of big capitalists- ‘democracy’.

Democracy, for the working class means today- Not a fight in conjunction with bourgeois leaders and parties but directly against them. Not a fight for defence of capitalist democracy, but a fight to undermine it. Finally, not a maneuver to assist the leaders of bourgeois opposition to take power but for establishment of the government of working people- a socialist democracy!
